"Peter Allen Hoffmann (b. 1979) used to paint—with a tender touch—small landscapes that were seen to have a lot in common with the work of Milton Avery, Arthur Dove and Marsden Hartley, and to evince an environmentalist's concern for nature. In his latest exhibition, however, Mr. Hoffmann takes a step back from the kind of sincerity that is increasingly seen as mawkish, and takes a giant step in the direction of the mix-and-match detachment that's so in fashion these days."
