JOSH SMITH
November 11 - December 13, 2003
Opening reception Friday, November 14, 2003 6-8 PM

Volume is pleased to present the work of New York artist Josh Smith. On view November 11 - December 13, 2003, Smith will show a large assortment of his handmade artist books; each is signed by the artist in editions of 20 with unique, hand- drawn covers. Also on view will be related work by Smith in other formats, including paintings, drawings and prints.

Primarily a painter, Smith’s books allow him to explore other ways of thinking than those involved in his paintings. Each book is the culmination and resolution of a single idea. Sometimes complex, as in “6th Ave+25th St.” (2003), and often very simple, as in “Boston Book” (2002), Smith’s books function as an independent language while also providing an entry into his paintings, several of which will be on view in the exhibition.

Made from Xerox copies and often string- or tape-bound, Smith’s books vary aesthetically and thematically. Some of the books incorporate painting and graphite contour drawings. The artist’s name is a prominent feature.

This is Josh Smith’s first exhibition with Volume. Volume is devoted to showcasing art- related rare books, artist’s books, and text-based art in a variety of media.

Gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 11-6 and by appointment. For more information, please call Wendy White at 212-989-8700.
